Understanding Plastics Material Selection in Healthcare and Commercial Grades Varieties

Irving Paz, healthcare market manager, Nexeo Solutions

When selecting a material for a medical application, whether for primary or secondary packaging or medical devices, it is necessary to understand not only the technical requirements of the final product, but also the regulatory requirements and attributes each material in the market has to offer. Healthcare material grades differ from commercial material grades in many aspects.

Differences in Material Grades

Today, many companies currently use commercial material grades in healthcare applications. Unfortunately, when the company seeks to get all the regulatory documentation from the resin supplier or distributor for these grades, they often find themselves with a material that does not comply with most of the requirements set up by either the U.S. FDA or European Commission for the healthcare market.
